Tributes paid to former first minister of Scotland : Alex Salmond
Alex Salmond is a Scottish politician who has played a major role in modern
Scottish politics. He served as the leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP)
across two terms (1990–2000 and 2004–2014) and was the First Minister of
Scotland from 2007 to 2014. Under his leadership, the SNP achieved a historic
parliamentary majority in 2011, which allowed him to pursue the 2014 Scottish
independence referendum. Though the referendum resulted in a "No"
vote, Salmond resigned as SNP leader and First Minister afterward.
Following his departure, Salmond became involved in controversy, including
sexual misconduct allegations, though he was acquitted of all charges in a 2020
trial. He later founded a new political party, Alba, in 2021, aiming to promote
independence from within the Scottish Parliament. However, Alba struggled to
make an electoral impact.
Throughout his career, Salmond has been a significant advocate for Scottish independence and has also had stints in the UK Parliament, both before and after his time as First Minister.
